Why Public Relations Matters in the Information Age: Part I

Updated: Sep 25, 2018

As described by prospects.ac.uk, "Public relations (PR) is about managing reputation. A career in PR involves gaining understanding and support for your clients, as well as trying to influence opinion and behavior." In the digital age, we are scrutinized by viewers more than ever because of the anonymity that comes with an online presence. This being said, we need to make sure that internet and professional personel have a clean presence to keep up their brand. In this series, I will describe why public relations is important, as well as different aspects of the business that I found to be helpful as a young public relations student and employee.

Looking from the outside in, most people believe there is no one better to manage themselves and their brand as well as they can do themselves. What they are missing is the simple fact that managing yourself and your brand holds immense bias. For example, a young Youtube star may believe speaking out in a time of crisis will clear their name in the wake of a scandal, a public relations professional will realize that the crisis will pass given time, and their is no need to clear their name if the crisis does not show proof of their involvement, or if them speaking out will not build viewers trust. One reason public relations professionals matter is that they hold the best interest in mind for their client without letting the clients feelings and beliefs cloud their judgement. We need Public Relations professionals in the Information Age because it leads the way for clear communication paths from viewers to influencers.
